Amit Yoran, a pioneering figure in the cybersecurity industry and the CEO of Tenable, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 54. His passing was confirmed by Tenable in a statement on Saturday, describing it as unexpected. Yoran had been on medical leave since December to undergo cancer treatment.
A Visionary Leader in Cybersecurity
Amit Yoran was instrumental in shaping the modern cybersecurity landscape. As CEO of Tenable since 2016, he led the company through significant milestones, including its initial public offering (IPO) in 2018. His leadership helped Tenable become a trusted name in cybersecurity, with over half of Fortune 500 companies relying on its services.
Yoran’s innovative approach to tackling cyber risks included the launch of Tenable One, a platform combining vulnerability management, cloud security, and identity protection. He believed in empowering organizations to manage their cyber risks effectively, calling Tenable’s solutions “unique in the market.”
A Career of Impact
Before joining Tenable, Yoran founded and led NetWitness, a company focused on advanced threat detection, which was later acquired by RSA Security. He served as RSA’s president from 2014 to 2016. Earlier in his career, Yoran co-founded Riptech Inc., an early innovator in digital defense.
Yoran also made significant contributions to public service. In 2003, he became the first National Cybersecurity Director at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he developed policies to strengthen national cyber defenses.
His Personal Battle with Cancer
Yoran publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in March 2024, describing it as “very treatable.” Despite the challenges, he continued to lead Tenable until December, when he temporarily stepped down. In his message to employees, Yoran expressed gratitude for their support and optimism about his recovery, stating, “This is a brief pause to prioritize my health.”

Remembering Amit Yoran
Art Coviello, Tenable’s newly appointed chairman, called Yoran an “extraordinary leader, colleague, and friend.” Coviello added, “His passion for cybersecurity, strategic vision, and ability to inspire others have shaped Tenable’s mission and culture.”
Tenable CFO Steve Vintz and COO Mark Thurmond, who have been serving as interim co-CEOs, will continue to lead the company while the board searches for a permanent successor.
A Lasting Legacy
Amit Yoran’s work has left an indelible mark on the cybersecurity industry. His contributions to technology, policy, and leadership have profoundly impacted how businesses and governments address digital threats.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced, but his legacy as a cybersecurity leader will continue to inspire generations to come.
